With a catalogue that just keeps growing at a formidable rate, it’s difficult to know where to start. Not content to rest on her hard -earned laurels, Steel continues to write with the same vim and vigor that she did 50 years ago - 2020 alone has seen seven new titles. Having sold over 800 million copies, she is one of, if not the bestselling author alive today. Regardless of what critics have to say, the numbers simply don’t lie. Pulling staggering twenty-hour writing shifts when she’s working on a new project is just another testament to her exceptionality, and we have this strict regimen to thank for the 190 books ranging from children’s books to poetry to fiction and nonfiction that Steel has published. The fact that Steel still writes all her novels on a manual typewriter should be enough to tell you she is no ordinary writer- and it’s safe to say she has led no ordinary life. With an arsenal of silk-stocking protagonists and life-changing crises up her sleeve, Steel has mastered the formula for the perfect love story, with all the twists and turns you could wish for. One only has to think of the romance genre for Danielle Steel’s name to immediately spring to mind. The 15 Best Danielle Steel Books in Order of Publication This novel–the only one ever written by the author, who died on a French battlefield in 1914–reminds one of The Magus for good reason. The Lost Domain (Le Grand Meaulnes) by Alain-Fournier (1913). The tone of the story, O’Brien’s excellent writing and the ending are all reminiscent of The Magus. A deeply disturbing mystery about the disappearance of a failed politician’s wife. In the Lake of the Woods by Tim O’Brien (1994). Like Fowles, Tartt is excellent at weaving classical themes and metaphors into an exciting plot. Tartt’s best-selling debut novel features a young Nicholas-like protagonist (confused, aimless) caught up in a mystery with a sinister group of Greek scholars at a New England university. The Secret History by Donna Tartt (1992). I’ll start it off with three novels that I think fit the bill. Contact us at Magusbooks -at- hotmail -dot- com if you’d like to participate, and please include your name, city and country. To that end, readers are invited to e-mail the title and author of one or two novels they believe fall into this category, along with a brief description of why. Another way to further the connection one may have to Fowles’ masterpiece is to seek out other novels that have a similar “flavor.” Reading The Magus is a powerful experience for many of us, and one that can be repeated several times over a period of years (it’s fun to discover exciting new aspects of the novel during subsequent readings). Stone is well aware he can’t mix business and pleasure, but when August comes to him with a proposal for a trade-seven paintings for seven nights with Lust-he can’t say no. But there’s something about the quiet stranger in the park that Stone wants to take apart, and that feeling only gets worse the more Stone gets to know him. Stone is a man who is rarely taken by surprise, so when he meets the artist, August Ashley, he doesn’t expect to trip and fall at his feet-literally. A former acrobat, Stone’s life was changed dramatically after an accident, and now he runs The Carnal Tower, a place where people can go to have their deepest and sometimes darkest fantasies realized. This portrayal of brother and sister is more true-to-the-life than a perfectly devoted pair of siblings. Their relationship is not perfect at the end of the story, but it is improved. Marly and Joe come to understand one another better as they learn to celebrate their differences. I also enjoyed the focus on sibling relationships. I rejoiced along with her when the sap first rose in the trees and when "the twigs turned to lace" and when her daddy started feeling better after everything that had happened to him in the war. Marly is most admirable in her search for miracles and especially in her discovery that she can create her own miracles. I am not at all surprised that this book won the Newbery Medal in 1957: besides having a pleasant pastoral narrative and lyrical dialogue, Miracles has an engaging, young, at times naive main character.
