And like the title implies, there are 3 of these books! All with a massively different story so the same things don't repeat! From escaping a cannibal, to genocide, to escaping from death's underworld, the ideas seem very out of the ordinary and honestly far-fetched, but the books handle the situations very well and these definitely deserved my time and hopefully yours too. The different personalities and mindsets are just breathtaking, too. I'm not sure if this is just me, but when I read I imagine all the scenes like a literal movie in my head, and the way the books describe the settings and happenings really just magical. I won't go too much into the storyline, but the characters, villains, POVs and twists are extremely well-done. Don't let the boringness of bats deter you, though, because this series to say myself is definitely the best I've read. It's a relatively old series, published around the 2000's if I remember, about these bat colonies. I recently finished the Silverwing Trilogy by Kenneth Opal. Although there are scientific explanations and statistics peppered throughout this book, it is primarily told like a story. Susannah’s story was terrifying, but so compelling, and I couldn’t put it down. I don’t often pick up memoirs, but this one sounded too fascinating to ignore. Everything she had taken for granted about her life, and who she was, was wiped out.īrain on Fire is the one of the most interesting books I have read this year. Within weeks, she would be transformed into someone unrecognizable, descending into a state of acute psychosis, undergoing rages and convulsions, hallucinating that her father had murdered his wife that she could control time with her mind. Then one day she woke up in hospital, with no memory of what had happened or how she had got there. Susannah Cahalan was a happy, clever, healthy twenty-four-year old. Though I would have moments of lucidity over the coming days and weeks, I would never again be the same person …’ ‘My first serious blackout marked the line between sanity and insanity. September 2013.īrain on Fire is the stunning debut from journalist and author Susannah Cahalan, recounting the real-life horror story of how a sudden and mysterious illness put her on a descent into a madness for which there seemed to be no cure Since its first appearance nearly 50 years ago, The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Frankweiler, who sold the statue to the museum – and to some equally remarkable discoveries about herself. Her debut novel “That Despicable Rogue” was released in the year 2016. She writes the “King’s Elite” series, and the “Wild Warriners” series, as well as some stand alone novels. Virginia writes historical romance novels. It still takes a long time for her to fall asleep. When she is not making up her own stories, she enjoys to travel to far away places, look for things to buy she doesn’t need, walking Trevor (her beloved Labrador), and read other peoples’ stories. This also fulfills her dreams of writing novels for Harlequin. It allows her to write Regency romances, and create heroes that she herself falls in love with and heroines that inspire her. One day, she decided to embrace her insomnia and begin writing these stories down.įortunately for her, Harlequin Mills and Boon saw that there was some potential in her stories and decided to publish them. The older she got, the stories she would tell got more complicated, taking longer and longer to get to the happy ending. She and her husband live near London with their two kids.Īs a child, it took a long time for Virginia to fall asleep, so it made her make up stories in her head to pass the time while she would stare at the ceiling. Author Virginia Heath is a former history teacher and is enthusiastic about drinking tea. Carter quickly became one of my favorite characters, someone I couldn't help but root for, with his almost childlike sense of joy and confidence that things will work out. A digression to Carter's childhood and early career, leading up to Harding's death and beyond, gives the story its soul. It also makes clear that a magic trick is not the same as an illusion, while continually reminding the reader of the importance of misdirection.īecause Harding, in the book, attended Carter's show shortly before he died, participating in the mysterious final act of illusion, a determined Secret Service agent becomes convinced Carter is somehow involved in the president's death, a plot thread that gives the story most of its tension. From that moment of historical significance, Gold weaves an amazing tale full of wonder, as well as perseverance, grief, and hope. The inspiration for Gold's story, aka the jumping off point, is the somewhat suspicious death of President Warren G. This is a wonderful blending of fact and fiction, focusing on Charles Carter, a magician in the early part of the 20th Century. What mystery there could have been is given away in the official synopsis of the book alone, and what isn’t can barely be considered mysterious or suspenseful. But it’s missing key elements to tie it all together, and without them, the novel sadly lacks substance.įirst, there is no real mystery or suspense. There is a neglected mansion with a creepy lake there are foreshadowing nightmares, high emotions, supernatural activity, and of course a romance. My verdict is that, no, it’s not gothic enough to be called a gothic novel. I was so, so hopeful for Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone, a novel that promised to be about monsters and magic, told in a lush gothic style-but was it truly a gothic work in the end? She vows to save Rowan, the estate, and herself, all while discovering why she is also being drawn to the Lord Under. She discovers that Rowan has a connection to the Lord Under, a sinister death god that makes bargains for a terrible price. However, once she arrives, neither lord nor lake are what they seem. The lord of the estate, Rowan Sylvanan, is said to have drowned his parents and brother in the lake. Violeta Graceling travels with her younger brother, Arien, to Lakesedge estate, expecting to be at the mercy of the Monster of Lakesedge.
